It is the story of an innocent young girl who desperately wants to escape the clutches of her cruel husband and fight her way out of poverty.

Frank lunged at Mary as she ran towards the door, and then he swung her around to face him. His foul beer smelling breath was all over her face as he thrust his ugly tongue into her mouth. Then he ripped the back of her dress, forced her crinoline from around her waist and flung her onto the bed.

She fought violently but he was a strong man, and the humiliation she felt as he forcefully took her time and time again hurt more than the physical violence, but when he asked her to turn over, she was petrified, for she knew what was coming and he was oblivious to her cries. His appetite was insatiable.
