Well Deserved Praise for our Key Workers

As I stood on the doorstep waiting for eight,
I held my arms out straight.

Then, when the time was right,
I thanked the Key Workers for continuing the fight.

We residents cheered and clapped as loud as we could,
because we all understood.

They are fighting the battle for our kin;
and they will carry on until they win.

An Extract from 'The Reluctant Father' free on Smashwords

Two hours passed with still no sign of Sarah, and Graham was just about to leave when he saw her walk up the path with Tony. Tony had his arm around her waist, and they were giggling. They looked like they were having a great time which annoyed him. When Sarah turned the key in the lock and Tony leaned in to kiss her, Graham had to jam his fist in his mouth to stop himself from calling out. Then, when Sarah responded to Tony’s kiss, Graham looked away. The situation was certainly testing his patience and he didn’t know what was stopping him from getting out of the car and confronting them both.

The kiss only lasted a few seconds and Graham was pleased when Tony turned around and walked back down the path. But anger filled every pore in his body and against his better judgement, once Tony was out of sight he got out of his car, slammed the door behind him and raced up to the house. He tried to kick the door open with his foot, but it was locked and in frustration, he banged his fist on the door.

Who’s that? Sarah grumbled as she walked back down the stairs holding Jack in her arms. ‘We’ll never get Jack off to sleep with that noise.’
She passed Jack to her mother and answered the door. She was surprised to see Graham standing there, but even more surprised when he grabbed hold of her arm and dragged her into the front room. Ellie tried to stop him, but she had Jack in her arms and couldn’t do much, so she raced upstairs, placed Jack in his bed and rushed back down.

‘Get your hands of me!’ Sarah screamed, and realising that he was hurting her Graham let go of her arm. Sarah could see the concerned face of her mother as she stood in the doorway and she tried to smile at her mother to reassure her that she was ok, but her arm was hurting too much.
‘Can you see to Jack please mum,’ Sarah said, as calmly as she could.
Her whole body was shaking now, and she felt sick, but she was determined to keep her mother out of this.
‘I’ll be upstairs if you need me and If you do anything to hurt her Graham, I’ll call the police. Do you understand!’ her mother screamed.
Graham nodded and then gently pushed Sarah onto the settee and sat down beside her. Ellie gave him a look that said one wrong move and I’ll kill you myself and left, leaving the door slightly ajar.
‘Are you sleeping with him?’
His face was almost touching hers now and she could see the anger in his eyes. She could also see that his temper was getting the better of him and was afraid of what he would do next. But despite that, she managed to find some inner strength and said as calmly as she could, ‘Yes.’
‘Damn you’ he roared, as he pulled her off the sofa and pinned her to the wall.
She was shaking violently now and felt breathless under the weight of him. In that split second, all the pent-up anger she had been repressing since he had split with her erupted and she whispered sarcastically, ‘Every night.’
‘You’re lying,’ he scoffed.
Scared that his temper would get the better of him he pushed her away and walked across the room to the window. He desperately needed to put some distance between them.

Sarah’s body was shaking violently as a feeling of nausea swept over her. She had never been so scared of anybody as she had of Graham in that moment, and suddenly, her legs gave way from under her and she collapsed into a heap on the floor. Despite being afraid, she didn’t cry out. She hoped to god that her son hadn’t heard any of this.

Disheartened by the fact that his worst nightmare had come true, Graham put his hands over his face and groaned. He needed to get away from the house before he did something stupid. She hadn’t even tried to hide the fact that they were sleeping together, and it hurt like hell. When he felt calm enough to talk, he looked over to Sarah and was shocked to see her lying on the floor sobbing. He raced over to her, praying to god that he hadn’t done any permanent damage.

When Sarah felt Graham’s arms around her, despite his previous behaviour she felt comforted and after a while, she calmed down. Graham could feel her body shaking beneath him and he took his coat off and covered her with it.
‘Are you scared?’ he whispered.
‘Not sure, but - but - I can’t stop shaking,’ she finally managed to say.
‘Shock I should imagine. I behaved like a bloody animal, didn’t I? ‘
‘I think I need a hot drink?’ she said, trying to lighten the situation but failing miserably.
‘I’ll get you one.’
With that, Graham jumped up and walked towards the door whilst Sarah gently pulled herself up on to the settee. Graham glanced up the stairs as he passed through the hallway and was pleased to see that Ellie wasn’t looking down at him.

Graham watched in silence as Sarah slowly sipped the tea and was pleased when the colour started to return to her cheeks. He was ashamed of himself. When it came to Sarah, he couldn’t seem to hide his emotions, and it was making life difficult for him - and her. Some may have called him possessive he thought, as he pulled a strand of hair away from her face. After reassuring himself that she was back to her normal self, he moved off the settee and on to the comfy chair opposite.

‘Do you love him?’
The fight had gone from him now, there was nothing more she could say to hurt him… unless she answered yes.
Sarah looked over at him and said irritably, ‘I don’t know.’
She felt a little better now that he had put some distance between them, and although she knew that it was the jealousy talking, she didn’t like this side of him.
‘I fell in love once. Love isn’t all it’s cracked up to be,’ she said, giving Graham an accusing look.
He knew that she was referring to him, but he didn’t bite back. He dare not.
‘Some people don’t realise what they’ve got until its gone,’ he said in his defence.
‘What do you want from me Graham?’

If he had something to say then he should say it and say it quickly, because she really wanted him to leave. She needed to feel safe again and she wouldn’t be able to feel secure until he had left the house and she had bolted the door behind him. Not because she thought he would hit her, but because she was afraid of her own feelings.
‘You!’ he whispered.
Sarah had been wanting to hear those words for a long time, but now that she had, his words felt hollow.
‘And you still love me don’t you Graham?’ she said sarcastically.

She had been in this position before and he had let her down, so what was stopping him from letting her down again. Graham smiled, hoping that she would see the sincerity in his face, but she remained calm, almost indifferent.
‘I’m serious… I love you.’ Graham said, frustrated by her coldness.
‘You’ve got a nerve. First you attack me for no reason and then you say you love me. Seriously Graham, you need help!’
‘Why don’t we start over?’ he said, wishing he’d thought of the idea sooner.
Sarah looked at him and frowned.
‘Start over?’

I gave myself a deadline for this Historical Novel, and now I'm six months overdue. lol

Gone but not Forgotten

I have been working on my latest historical novel since last summer but sadly, I've realised, that after proofreading since forever, I am going to have to delete the last half of the book.

I have deleted scenes before, but not half a book. Sadly, there is no structure to it, the timeline is off,
and it's so disjointed, that it cannot be saved.

In fact, I should have done it a long time ago, but it's like saying goodbye to a much loved friend.

An extract from ' A Callous Land' an eBook by Susan Williams

‘Are you sure you want to do this?’
‘I’ve never been so certain and judging by the look of the rest of my body, and the look of horror on the faces of the men folk in the fort, I can guess what I look like. But thank you for your concern and if you don’t mind, would you leave me alone for tonight and fetch me in the morning.’
‘I don’t mind Isabella. I understand. I’ll see you tomorrow.’

With that, Mary left the dark, lonely shack and a little tear fell from her eye. She wanted to be there for Isabella, but she knew, this was something Isabella was going to have to come to terms with on her own. She hadn’t wanted to give her the mirror but had given in when she saw the look of despair on Isabella’s face, and now she was regretting it.

Isabella placed the mirror face down on the bed and walked over to the dressing table and poured herself a glass of sherry which she downed in one, and then another and then another, until, she felt numb enough to face what was to come. She pulled her long brown hair up off her face and fastened it with a clip that she had found on the dressing table. Then she sat on the bed and picked the mirror up.

First, she looked at her forehead, there were a few small scars but nothing serious and they didn’t distract from her beauty. Then she looked at her eyes and nose. Her face didn’t look as good as she’d hoped it would. One of her eyes had a huge scar that went diagonally across her face and on the other eye, a huge fragment by the side of her eye had been gouged out. Then she looked down at her lips, fortunately, if you could call it that, there were just a few scars over the top of them. Then she looked down at her neck. She had a large red scar around it.

There were no words that could describe how she felt and as she put the mirror down on the bed, a stream of tears escaped from her eyes. Silent, knowing tears that she had no control over. But she felt no more pain than she already did. The black void within her just filled up with more excruciating hollowness.

She’d endured everything that was humanly possible and survived, and for that she knew she should be grateful, but she wasn’t. She had no life and nothing to look forward to and now she understood why Tyak, the first man she had ever loved, had been repulsed by her and in that moment, she was no longer afraid, because death would be a welcome release for her.

A Different Kind of Love

‘Mind if I butt in?’
Taylor turned around to see Lewis looking at him and said, ‘Give it all you’ve got mate but don’t forget she’s with me.’
Then he left them to it and as he returned to his seat, he looked around for Catherine. She was sat at the bar glaring at Lewis and Jade and he smiled. She was jealous, and she couldn’t hide it. He was tempted to go over to her, and give her some choice words, but what was the point?’

‘How are you?’ Lewis asked, as he twirled her around and caught her in his arms.
‘I used to love it when you did that. Now, you look as if you’re trying too hard.’
‘What’s that supposed to mean?’
‘I thought we had a happy marriage, but I was never in control of my own life. Now I’ve got a life of my own, I realise how much you brainwashed me.’
‘I wish I hadn’t strayed and the more I see you with that bloke, the worse I feel. I love you. Can’t you forgive me?’
‘Your words are falling on death ears. I have no feelings for you, whatsoever. I’m only dancing with you to make that cow jealous. Look at her, she looks as if she wants to hit me, or you?’

‘Please forgive me Jade,’ Lewis said, as he stopped dancing, forcing her to stop too.
‘I forgive you, there. Now get back to her before her head explodes. Oh yes, thanks for firing me. I’m sure I’ll get another job without references.’
‘That was her idea.’ Then hastily, he grabbed her arm and pulled her to him so that his face was almost touching hers and said, ‘We were good together and you know that. Tell me to my face that it’s not true.’
Taylor rushed over, stood in front of her and said, ‘That’s not how to treat a woman. Which is probably why you couldn’t keep her.’
That was too much for Ian and he took a swipe at him, but Taylor dodged the blow and turned around to go. He wasn’t a violent man and had no intention of making himself look like an idiot.

Sadly, Ian had other ideas, and grabbed hold of Taylor’s arm to stop him going and Taylor turned around and smiled. Then to annoy Ian more he said, ‘I’m not a violent man but I can hold my own, and I warn you, if you start something, I’ll finish it.’
‘I know your type, you think you can have any girl you like but you’ll not have her, and I’m going to do my best to show her what a low life you are.’
‘Look at yourself mate. I’m a lot of things, but I’ve never cheated on a girl in my life. Before you start slagging me off, look over there.’
Ian looked towards where he was pointing and knew he had lost the battle when Catherine beckoned him over. Embarrassed, he started to walk over to her, but not before looking Taylor in the eye and saying, ‘I’d keep my eyes open if I were you. You never know who will creep up and bite you.’
‘Threats now is it. Well, here’s one to think about. If I ever have cause to believe that you, or a hired hand are out to get me, I’ll bloody kill you and don’t think that’s a threat, it’s a promise.’

Ian walked off and Taylor, shaking slightly, walked to the toilet. He didn’t want Jade to see that he was troubled. His father had been a bully and he didn’t want to follow in his footsteps if he could help it, but sometimes, more often than he would have liked, he’d had to stand his ground.

When Taylor walked up to Jade, she hugged him and said lovingly, ‘My Knight in shining armour. How can I ever repay you?’
‘There’s a warm bed at home, how does that sound?’
‘Sounds perfect.’
Then, she stood on her tip toes and kissed him hard on the lips and he responded eagerly, then took her hand and led her out of the pub.

The following morning, having had breakfast they were now sat outside on the patio enjoying the sunshine.
‘I hate to break it like this,’ Taylor said hesitantly. ‘I’d love to spend some more time with you, but I’m off to the south of France for a month. I do this every year. I need some time to paint, and there’s no distractions over there.’
‘When do you get time to paint?’
‘I usually paint in the evenings or at weekends but for some reason,’ he said, winking at her. ‘I can’t seem to concentrate.’
‘I understand, it’s cool. Besides, I’m going to need some time to get my business up and running and I’ll be busy too. However, I’m going to miss you like crazy.’
‘Same here, do you want to show me how much?’
She giggled and then said seriously, ‘I know we haven’t talked about it, but It would make me sick to my stomach if you slept with someone else. I don’t suppose you’re ready to remain faithful to me?’

‘I can do that and the same goes for you. Now come on, we need to cement the deal.’
