The Reluctant Father by [Williams, Susan]

As promised, an extract from my contemporary novel

Josh and Graham sat opposite each other in the canteen, silently sipping their tea.
What now?’ Josh asked, as kindly as he could.
Graham shook his head, shrugged his shoulders and said feebly, ‘I don’t know.’
‘Then you better start knowing because you’ve got a child in there and Sarah’s going to need you. You need to get your priorities right!’
‘She told you to say that did she?’
‘You know she didn’t, because she wouldn’t do that to you, and you know that too, don’t you? You don’t deserve her or the baby. They’re too good for you,’ Josh said angrily, wanting to hit Graham and forcing himself not to.
A burning anger was rising inside of Graham as he analysed every word Josh said, and then he gave way to his temper when he heard Josh mumble, ’Coward.’

Graham pushed his chair from under him, hurled himself across the table and grabbed Josh by the throat. Josh’s chair fell backwards and they both ended up in a heap on the floor. Graham went to hit Josh in the face, but instinctively, Josh held his hands up and pushed Graham to the side. Graham’s fist hit the floor hard and when something cracked in his hand he yelled out in pain.

‘Stop!’ the doctor yelled down the corridor as two security guards pulled them apart.
The doctor looked at Josh and said angrily, ‘Get back to your friend - and you!’ pointing an accusing finger at Graham, ‘Find somebody to look at that hand.’
Josh and Graham did as they were told.
‘Idiot!’ Josh said, as he pushed past Graham. Graham snarled at him and replied,’ Moron!’
